Pilot project will convert shoulder to an additional lane, expected to cut delays by half during rush-hours<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is conducting a pilot project to expand capacity on one of the worst bottlenecks in the region \u2013 I-225 southbound in the Denver Tech Center (DTC) area.\u00a0 <\/span>CDOT will convert the shoulder to an additional lane by re-striping less than a mile of I-225 southbound from Yosemite St. to I-25.<\/span><\/p>\n

There will be access restrictions for this project for it to work effectively. Drivers coming from DTC Blvd., Yosemite St. or E. Quincy Ave. who get on the on the on-ramp to I-225 southbound will not have access to I-25 southbound.\u00a0 <\/span>A concrete barrier will restrict them to I-25 northbound. This will prevent traffic weaving across lanes, improving safety and efficiency for the mainline of I-225 southbound.<\/span><\/p>\n

CDOT awarded the project to K.E.C.I. Colorado, Inc. Work will be done at nights to minimize construction impacts. \u00a0 <\/span>Construction is expected to begin later in October and should be completed in a month. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith traffic back-ups extending over three miles on I-225 southbound during the peak travel times, converting the shoulder to a lane is anticipated to cut traffic delays in half during the rush-hours,\u201d said CDOT Denver Regional Director Paul Jesaitis. \u201cWe get a lot of complaints about this location and something needs to be done now.\u00a0 <\/span>Rather than waiting for years to get the $65 million needed for a permanent fix to build additional lanes and new bridges, the restriping project is a viable solution we can deliver this fall that should bring immediate congestion relief.\u00a0 <\/span>We have seen great success with other restriping projects in the state, such as US 36 and the I-70 Mountain Corridor.\u00a0 <\/span>The I-225 southbound restriping is a pilot project and will be evaluated and monitored for effectiveness.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Night-time work on I-225 southbound from Yosemite St. to I-25, lasting up to a month will begin later in October. At least one lane will remain open on I-225 southbound during over-night construction. The first few nights, crews will set up concrete barriers, preventing DTC Blvd. and other on-ramp traffic to I-225 southbound from entering I-25 southbound. The remaining nights will be focused on re-striping I-225 southbound.<\/span><\/p>\n

In preparation of construction, CDOT will have signage ready to warn motorists of construction and to alert motorists of new traffic patterns.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
