{"id":3018,"date":"2018-01-18T20:01:28","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T20:01:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/52.10.1.109\/?p=3018"},"modified":"2018-01-18T20:01:28","modified_gmt":"2018-01-18T20:01:28","slug":"rei-on-track-for-fall-move-to-greenwood-village","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecoloradostatesman.com\/?p=3018","title":{"rendered":"REI on track for fall move to Greenwood Village"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>BY PETER JONES<\/strong><br \/>\nNEWS EDITOR<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Last year\u2019s fall of one of the nation\u2019s largest sporting-goods retailers continues its ripple effect on recreation-centered businesses in the south metro area and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While the largest climbing gym in the United States will soon fill Sports Authority\u2019s former headquarters in Englewood, outdoor-recreation specialist REI remains on track to take over the former retail giant\u2019s location in Greenwood Village. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sports Authority filed for bankruptcy last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The latest higher-profile REI location, 9000 E. Peakview Ave., near the intersection of I-25 and Arapahoe Road, will replace the retailer\u2019s previous smaller location on County Line Road in Centennial near IKEA, a site REI had maintained for nearly two decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The new 45,000-square-foot REI in its more visible site is expected to carry a larger assortment of equipment when it opens in the fall, the company says, emphasizing its educational focus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTo be able to support this outdoor community in a larger space just a couple miles from our current location will help all of us to inspire each other to get outside,\u201d Kris Reale, the store\u2019s manager, said in a statement. \u201cThis new store will show how we bring the outdoors in and connect the local community to life outdoors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">REI Outdoor School will offer in-store and field classes in those areas, as well as in hiking, climbing and backpacking. Most of the programming will be free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to a larger selection of gear for mountain biking, climbing and snow sports, the new REI will boast maintenance shops for biking, skiing and snowboarding. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When asked for further comment and an estimated opening date, the corporation declined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Greenwood Village location is the second former Sports Authority in the state that REI has repurposed, having taken over the onetime Dillon outlet in May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This year, Seattle-based REI announced plans to invest $160,000 in local outdoor-geared nonprofits.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY PETER JONES NEWS EDITOR Last year\u2019s fall of one of the nation\u2019s largest sporting-goods retailers continues its ripple effect on recreation-centered businesses in the south metro area and beyond.
