Photos by Peter Jones<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">\nNEWS EDITOR<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Centennial continues to rack up honors as a decidedly 21<sup>st<\/sup> century city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last week, the youngest municipality in the immediate metro area became the first governmental organization to win Gallup\u2019s Great Workplace Award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI love baseball and I feel like we just won the World Series,\u201d said Paula Gibson, Centennial\u2019s human-resources director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The city was one of 37 organizations, mostly businesses, to receive Gallup\u2019s recognition this year for what the pollster calls an \u201cengaged workplace culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Scott Brown, director of business development for the iconic research and consulting firm, presented the Great Workplace statue\u2014as well as two others\u2014to city staff at an Aug. 2 ceremony in the award-winning Centennial Center Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhat we find is regardless of organization size, location, culture, industry, the best organizations share one common trait,\u201d Brown told the group. \u201cThey have an intense and intentional focus on engaging their employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Brown said accountability and performance, well-defined development programs and the treatment of employees as \u201cstakeholders\u201d all played a role in the city\u2019s recognition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAs a result, their employees create more and better work and stay at the organization longer and win the best customers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-89438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.villagerpublishing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/GALLUP-QUOTE.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Or more satisfied taxpayers and city residents, in Centennial\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Brown, who spent considerable time researching Centennial\u2019s organizational culture, went so far as to say the city had an average of 14 engaged employees for every one employee who was \u201cactively disengaged,\u201d placing Centennial mathematically in the 99<sup>th<\/sup> percentile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s evident your organization is incredibly purpose-driven,\u201d Brown said. \u201c\u2026 Thank you for leading this beautiful city, one of the best cities in the country to live, work, play and grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In addition to the Workplace Award, Centennial was 2017\u2019s only recipient of Gallup\u2019s Trailblazer Award in recognition of the city\u2019s Wellness Committee, which has organized everything from a financial-wellness class to yoga in the park and a smoothie bar for employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Additionally, Deputy City Manager Elisha Thomas was named one of 12 national finalists for Gallup\u2019s Manager of the Year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cShe knows what you\u2019re thinking and feeling before you do many times,\u201d said Travis Greiman, Centennial\u2019s public-works director. \u201c\u2026 Over time, I came to appreciate that as a real strength and talent because she uses it for good.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>City honored for \u2018engaged\u2019 management and employees BY PETER JONES NEWS EDITOR Centennial continues to rack up honors as a decidedly 21st century city.
